Hong Kong

Airport

Hong Kong International Airport is the main airport in Hong Kong and is located on the island of Chek Lap Kok. It is an important transhipment centre, passenger hub and gateway for destinations in mainland China and the rest of Asia. With a total of 90 gates, it is home to one of the world’s largest passenger terminal buildings with 65,000 members of staff. Annually 69 million passengers travel through this airport. More than 100 airlines fly from the airport to over 180 cities all over the world.

The project architects were Foster and Partners and is the most expensive airport project ever, with an area of 516,000 m². The sides of the terminals, predominantly glass, are designed to break during high wind speeds, thus relieving the pressure and the terminal can withstand an intense typhoon.
